projects

Installation: suspended glass rods (1.80m x 0.90 m), video/sound loop 8min; International Glass Festival, Stourbridge, August / September 2006
technical: Hand formed and heat treated glass canes are individually suspended inside the alcove of an original glass factory to form a sculptural 3dimensional glass screen. The glass remains clear and yet the projected image is crisp, deep and gives a feeling of movement in space as it glides across each glass cane. The video features local glass makers, their relationships, their love for the material and glass making in the factory. The archive video footage is mixed with the footage filmed at Plowden & Thompson in 2006. The audio resonates the early morning sounds in the factory.

Installation space: alcove 3.50x3.50x5m

inspiration

When the lights are turned off and the world goes quiet, inside the glass cone one can hear the chatter of glassmakers who left their marks there; their tools, the fire, their laughter and camaraderie are the dust between the bricks. It is a soft, resonating, distant sound held within the quiet memory of the building. We can feel the past life of its people connecting with today.

concept: Every grain of sand that is melted in the glass captures tiny specs of light, which reflect back to us visual impressions of this present moment and all of its yesterdays.
